- Hospital hygiene and waste management training

As part of a rehabilitation project for 23 hospitals in Kenya, the Ministry of Health designed an institutional strengthening programme. The MoH contracted AMPC in 2010 as experts in healthcare waste management (HCWM) to deliver a comprehensive training programme for hospital hygiene and waste management to the 23 selected hospitals located throughout Kenya. The assignment included an assessment of the current HCWM practices at the hospitals and the relevant national policies and legislation, followed by the development and provision of the training programme. AMPC used the outcome of the assessment to prepare a curriculum for a series of in-depth HCWM courses based on international guidelines and best practices, while keeping in mind the local context and options for HCWM. The training provided hands-on information for the hospital staff to use in their own institutes by providing examples and best practices from comparable hospitals. The Train-The-Trainers approach ensured that knowledge and experiences from the programme cascaded throughout both current and new staff of all 23 hospitals.
